PROCESS OF FINISHING A BASEMENT
FRAMING
Assuming there is no demolition required in an existing basement, framing will be the first step in any basement finishing project. During this phase, exterior walls are framed, as well as any room dividing walls and door openings.
ELECTRICAL
Once the framing is completed, the rough in of the electrical is the next step. This will include the installation of all outlets according to building code, the addition of canned lighting in the ceiling, and any other custom electrical work needed in the space.
INSULATION AND FIRE BLOCKING
All exterior walls are insulated once the electrical work is completed and approved by the city inspector. This portion also includes fire blocking and any additional insulation that homeowners may want added in the ceilings or other spaces in the basement.
DRYWALL AND PAINTING
After all the work behind the walls is completed and inspected, it is finally time to begin closing the walls. This portion include hanging the drywall, finishing the drywall, and finally the painter coming in to prime and paint the newly installed walls.
FLOORING
When all the wall and ceiling work is finally completed, it’s then time to install the flooring. This will most likely be a luxury vinyl plank or carpet floor. Many luxury vinyl plank floors don’t require an underlayment on the concrete basement slab. If carpeting is chosen, underlayment will be installed prior to the carpeting.
DOORS AND TRIM
The final stage of the basement finish or remodel is the installation of interior doors, casings, and baseboards in the finished space. Any touch-ups needed in the finished area of the basement are completed immediately following the door and trim installations.
CEILING OPTIONS FOR FINISHED BASEMENTS
PAINTED EXPOSED CEILING
A very common trend for basement ceiling finishes that often makes sense for projects where overall project budget is important, there are things mounted below the floor joists, and future convenient access to pipes and drains is of the upmost importance.
DRYWALL AND PAINTING
Drywalling the basement ceiling with a textured or flat finish gives the basement space a very clean and luxurious feel, just like the upstairs. This finishing option is available for basement ceilings that don’t have mounted water lines, HVAC parts and pipes below the ceiling joists.
DROP CEILING
Drop ceilings are very common finishes for basement ceilings for multiple reasons; The ceiling tiles look great once installed, they provide easy access to water lines and drains in case of issues in the future, and they are generally easier to install than standard drywall.
FINISHED BASEMENT FLOORING OPTIONS
LUXURY VINYL PLANK FLOORING
Luxury vinyl plank flooring has become an extremely popular flooring option for finished basements for good reason. The floors are waterproof, pet friendly, and require less maintenance compared to a carpeted basement floor.
Luxury Vinyl plank flooring is our number 1 recommended floor for any basement finishing project. Many luxury vinyl plank floor also come with a limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturer.
CARPET FLOORING
Carpeting is another flooring option for basements that some homeowners prefer. Carpeting gives a room a cozy and comfortable feel. The issue with mixing carpeting and basements sometimes arises where there is water and moisture involved.
The mix of moisture and carpeting material can sometimes create unpleasant smells when entering the room. Carpeting will also require more maintenance in the future compared to Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring.
